The Atlas Field film evaluation by Matt Boiselle
The Atlas Field: Directed by Sid Lucero and starring Davide Fusinato, Giuseppe Pestillo & Christopher Tetrokan
Every infrequently you watch a film and are available away considering, “I didn’t hate it…but I’m also not exactly rushing to watch it again.” THE ATLAS FIELD is a type of films for me.
Directed by Sid Lucero, this atmospheric little horror movie follows Daniel, a person affected by a terminal sickness, who convinces his brother Henry to return to a mountain from their childhood. What begins out as a visit crammed with outdated reminiscences slowly turns into one thing a lot stranger as actuality itself begins to unravel round them. And I’ll give the film credit score: there’s positively an attention-grabbing concept buried in right here.
The complete idea of two brothers returning to a spot from their previous whereas the world round them begins changing into more and more unreliable has a number of potential. There are some genuinely creepy moments, and the film does a reasonably good job creating an uneasy environment. You get that feeling that one thing may be very improper lengthy earlier than you utterly perceive what that one thing really is. The downside for me is that THE ATLAS FIELD by no means fairly grabbed me the way in which I wished it to. It’s a type of films the place I might respect what it was attempting to perform greater than I really loved watching it. The pacing is deliberate, the story is deliberately mysterious, and there are stretches the place you’re left attempting to piece collectively precisely what the hell is occurring. Normally, I’m completely high quality with that. Give me a bizarre, ambiguous horror film and I’ll fortunately sit there attempting to determine the rattling factor out.
But right here, I discovered myself getting somewhat extra indifferent from the story than intrigued by it. There are some good performances from Davide Fusinato and Giuseppe Pestillo, and the remoted mountain setting positively helps create the correct environment. There’s a bleakness hanging over the entire thing that matches the story very well. I simply want the film had given me somewhat extra to latch onto alongside the way in which. That doesn’t imply THE ATLAS FIELD is unhealthy. It’s not. I can completely see this working for somebody who enjoys slower, atmospheric horror that focuses extra on temper, psychological unease and unraveling actuality than conventional scares. For me, although, it landed someplace within the center. There have been issues I preferred. There have been issues I appreciated. And there have been positively moments the place I believed, “Okay, NOW we’re getting somewhere.” But when the credit rolled, I used to be mainly left with a shrug.
Not each horror film has to knock you over. Sometimes you watch one, respect what it was attempting to do, and transfer on to the subsequent one. THE ATLAS FIELD is that film for me.
